"South Carolina's English Lady"
by Sarah Porter Carroll - published in 1989
This scarce book chronicles the family of
Mary Poulton Dawkins from her childhood in England, the
family's hardships when arriving in New York, her father's
death and the subsequent splitting-up of family, Mary's
teaching career and marriage to Judge Thomas Nuckolls
Dawkins of Union, and the re-uniting of her siblings as
they settled in Union. Mary and her sister Jane's
detailed writings tell of life in Union during the Civil
War, and when their house was the last Capitol of the
Confederacy, and after the war. The book also covers the
Episcopal Church of the Nativity which was founded and
built by Judge Dawkins and Mary with the help of Clinton
Wilson. It also includes first hand accounts of daily
events and detailed wills of several family members.
Mary's intelligence and tenacity coupled with Judge
Dawkins' intellect and power easily qualifies the Dawkins
family as an early FIRST FAMILY of Union,
SC.
